The must-dos for safe anal sex!
- Contraception
If you are wanting to have anal sex, use barrier contraception to stop yourself from contracting a sexually transmitted infection. It’s also important to make sure that you’re getting regular sexual health checkups at your local sexual health clinic.
- Vaginas + Bums Do Not Mix
If a vagina comes in contact with any of the bacteria from an anus, it can cause a yeast infection (thrush) or a UTI. Make sure to keep anything that has been in contact with the anus away from the vagina. This means changing a condom if you are going from anal to vaginal sex, and making sure all areas are clean. If you don’t, you or your partner might get sick.
- Pre, during and post anal care
The anus is a sensitive area that is important for a vital process in your body, so it is important to take care of it!
- Clean the area beforehand, you can do this by having a shower. This also might relax you, meaning that a penetrative experience may be nicer.
- If penetrating the anus, use lots of lube! The inside of your anus is delicate tissue and can tear easily. This can be very painful and cause infections. Make sure you are communicating with your partner about what feels good for you and to stop if you are in pain.
- If you are in pain after, or you notice swelling, bleeding, or difficulty pooing, go to see a doctor. You can check out our page on how to see a doctor by yourself.
