From the Other Side

This video shares the personal experiences of domestic and family violence of members of the LGBTQ community in NSW. Survivors talk about their strategies for survival, challenge myths about domestic and family violence in LGBTQ relationships, and how they were able to seek support. The video also identifies behaviours and dynamics that are unique to domestic and family violence in an LGBTQ context such as using ‘outing’ as a method of control and isolation from LGBTQ friends and communities. Other examples can include verbal abuse related to gender identity, controlling medication or access to other treatments and ridiculing the other’s expression of sexuality, gender or intersex.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing family or domestic violence you can call ACON for LGBTQ specific support or 1800 RESPECT for general support.
